(AP) ? In one exciting jaunt down the sideline, Ed Reed ran his way into the record book and took the heart out of the Cincinnati Bengals.

The Baltimore Ravens standout safety also tweaked his hamstring, which gave him an opportunity to work on his standup routine at the podium after Baltimore's 44-13 rout on Monday night.

Reed's 34-yard interception return for a touchdown was the highlight of a solid performance by the Baltimore defense and one of the key plays in the game. The score put the Ravens up 34-13 late in the third quarter and sealed the Bengals' fate.

"I think it was part of it," said Cincinnati quarterback Andy Dalton, who threw the pass.

The interception gave Reed 1,497 yards in interception returns, eclipsing the previous NFL mark of 1,483 by Rod Woodson. Reed's dash for the end zone was punctuated by a desperate dive at the front pylon in the left corner.

"I wasn't going to let an O-lineman catch me," he said with a grin. "That's why I dove. I strained my hamstring trying to dive. You know, I'm 34 in two hours (at midnight Tuesday). Father Time catches up to you."

He said the hamstring injury was "minor."

Joe Flacco had an outstanding game in Baltimore's no-huddle offense, going 21 for 29 for 299 yards and two touchdowns. That certainly was a huge part of the Ravens' 11th straight home win and ninth consecutive victory within the AFC North.

But the defense, playing its first game under coordinator Dean Pees, did its part. Haloti Ngata had two of Baltimore's four sacks, proving the Ravens just might survive without NFL Defensive Player of the Year Terrell Suggs, who's out indefinitely with a torn right Achilles tendon.

"We didn't play perfectly as a defense," middle linebacker Ray Lewis said, "but when it got to where we needed to make plays, we made the plays we were supposed to make."

After letting an early 14-point lead dwindle to 17-13, the Ravens pulled away by scoring 24 straight points in just over six minutes. Ray Rice ran for 68 yards and two short scores, but instead of dominating the Baltimore attack in his usual fashion, the running back took a back seat to Flacco.

"Obviously, everything went pretty well for us tonight," Flacco said.

Not so for the Bengals, who made the playoffs last year without beating a team that qualified for postseason play. In this one, Cincinnati once again came up short against a high-caliber opponent.

"That certainly wasn't what we expected to have out there today," coach Marvin Lewis said. "We got outplayed and we got outcoached."

Defensive tackle Domata Peko said, "They just beat us today, and we've got to get better."

It's hard to imagine the Bengals playing much worse.

"They beat us in all three phases of the game and they played well," offensive tackle Andre Smith said. "We need to think about how we can get better. We need to go back to Cincinnati, get to work and improve."

Dalton went 22 for 37 for 221 yards, and BenJarvus Green-Ellis rushed for 91 yards and a score in his Cincinnati debut.

Dalton went 4 for 5 for 56 yards in the opening possession of the second half, and although the march stalled at the Baltimore 1, Mike Nugent kicked a 19-yard field goal to get the Bengals to 17-13.

Flacco brought the Ravens right back, throwing a bit of Rice into the mix with excellent results. Rice caught a screen pass for 18 yards and ran for 13 more during an 89-yard drive in which Flacco went 5 for 7 for 73 yards, including a 10-yard touchdown pass to tight end Dennis Pitta.

After a 40-yard field goal by Ravens rookie Justin Tucker made it 27-13 with 1:13 left in the quarter, Reed struck exactly one minute later.

Flacco went 12 for 15 for 183 yards in the first half to stake Baltimore to a 17-10 lead.

Flacco set the tone for the shootout on the game's first offensive play, throwing deep to Torrey Smith for a 52-yard gain. That set up a 46-yard field goal by Tucker.

Baltimore quickly forced a punt, and Flacco went back to work. He completed a 16-yarder to Jacoby Jones on a third-and-15, tossed a 1-yard pass to Rice on a fourth-and-1 and watched from the backfield as Rice completed the 12-play, 63-yard drive with a 7-yard touchdown run behind a fine block by fullback Vonta Leach.

"It was really fun for me. I barely got hit tonight," Rice said.

After Dalton got Cincinnati to 10-3 with a 76-yard march that ended with a field goal, Flacco capped an 82-yard drive by splitting two defenders with a 34-yard touchdown pass to Anquan Boldin.

The Ravens finally punted with 6 minutes left in the first half, and Dalton used the rest of the time to move the Bengals to their lone touchdown. The Bengals twice converted fourth downs on the 81-yard march, the last one a 6-yard run into the end zone by Green-Ellis on a fourth-and-1.

NOTES: Ravens owner Art Modell was honored with a tribute and a moment of silence before the game. ... Ravens coach John Harbaugh is 5-0 in openers. ... Cincinnati has lost four straight vs. Baltimore after winning three in a row.

In Defense of the Friend Zone | Charlie Nox

One of the biggest problems people face when dating is getting stuck in the friend zone. The idea of the friend zone and its perils is so popular there are internet memes, a gazillion articles on how to avoid it, several music videos and even a show on MTV. Briefly defined, the Friend Zone is a metaphorical land in which someone you want to date would rather ?just be friends.? According to all the wisdom of the Interwebs, once you?re in the friend zone, it?s all but impossible to escape.

But here?s the thing?the Friend Zone isn?t the problem. Lots of people have friendships with attractive interesting people and they don?t lie awake all night being tortured about it. Being friends with people of the gender you are fond of is REALLY good for your emotional development and social standing. Friends are a lot less drama and a great reality check when you really need it.

So this leads to a really important question?if the Friend Zone isn?t the problem, then why does it SEEM like the friend zone is the problem?

Why it seems like friendship is the problem, is that our culture describes friendship as a relationship with someone you a) aren?t obligated to spend time with (i.e. family and co-workers) and b) are not sleeping with. A lack of sex is pretty much the sole determining factor we use to describe friendship. And based on just that criteria, not having sex with someone you want to have sex with, i.e. being friends with someone when you want to be something else, seems like the problem.

But here?s the truth?sex is only one of the indicators of a romantic relationship. When we are in a relationship, we act differently and do different things?and not just between the sheets. We discuss our deepest emotional issues?fears, hopes, insecurities. We talk all the time and expect the other person to be more available for us than for other people. We answer the phone more quickly, step out of parties to take a call when there?s an emotional crisis, we let people see our family drama, and support them dealing with theirs. We listen to story after story about horrible exes and youthful mistakes. We plan for the future and day dream and hold each other when we are sad. We buy them gifts, plan special dates, and dream up ways to make them smile. Whether you are casual, serious, monogamous or polyamorous, there is an upped level of attention, emotional involvement, calendar space and money spent when you are romantically involved with someone. Plus, there?s sex.

So if a ?friendship? is a problem for you, here?s the hard truth. You aren?t really their friend. You?re stuck in a fromance?a friend romance. What you do, how you respond to them, what you say, your tone of voice, everything is determined by your crush on them, NOT your friendship with them. You call yourself friends, but in every way except sex, you are not friends.

In reality, you aren?t in the Friend Zone OR the lover zone. You are in a weird hybrid twilight zone. Being in this weird space means that you are stuck. If you were truly in the Friend Zone you might be able to transition to the lover zone (this actually happens a lot, but only if you are squarely in the Friend Zone first), but with one foot in each camp you are totally screwed.

Why do we end up in fromances?

People end up in these hybrid relationships because they think they are as good as it?s going it get, so they settle for this less than perfect relationship and tell themselves, ?well at least this is better than nothing.? Here?s the problem with that line of thinking: when you settle for less than what you want, you give up your chance to have what you really want.

That?s important, so let?s just say that again. Settling for a fromance when you really want a romance prevents you from having a romance with them OR anyone else. The Friend Zone is not the problem; you settling is the problem.

This crush (or crushes) is taking up the space where a romance could exist. The time, energy, thoughts, social calendar and money are being absorbed by this fromance instead. You need to break it off. I recommend actually telling your crush that your relationship is going to change so they know what to expect and it?s harder to slip back into old patterns. If they are worth keeping as a friend, they?ll understand and work with you to create a real friendship. If they freak out or try to rope you back into being their emotional partner without committing to something more, you might want to question whether even a friendship is a good idea.

Are you ?stuck in the friend zone?? Are you ready to finally break up with your fromances so you can have what you really want? I want to hear about all your fromance break ups post your stories below!

Obama gets convention 'bounce': Should Mitt Romney be worried?

Monday's polls give President Obama a 5 point lead over Mitt Romney after national conventions, but Romney pollsters say the state of the economy will be decisive in November's vote.

Currently, it seems like President Obama got a substantial bounce upward in his poll numbers from the Democratic National Convention. Gallup?s tracking poll now gives Mr. Obama a 5 point edge over GOP nominee Mitt Romney, up from a 1 point lead prior to the Charlotte, N.C., festivities. This morning's Rasmussen Reports' tracking poll shows Obama with a similar 5 point lead ? his largest margin in that survey since March 17.

But there?s a reason a post-convention poll gain is called a ?bounce.? Bounces go up, and (usually) they come down. Where the polls will be when the numbers settle, nobody yet knows.

?As with all bounces, it remains to be seen how long it will last,? concludes Rasmussen?s daily poll report.

Thus on Monday the Romney camp began pushing back against the notion that the conventions represented a break point in the campaign and that it?s now time for the GOP to panic. Among other things, Romney pollster Neil Newhouse released a memo urging supporters to remain calm about the latest polling numbers.

?While some of the voters will feel a bit of a sugar-high from the conventions, the basic structure of the race has not changed significantly,? argues Mr. Newhouse.

By that, Newhouse means that the nature of the economy remains unchanged. Twenty-three million Americans remain out of work, and unemployment has topped 8 percent. Forty-seven million Americans are on food stamps.

Obama?s favorability ratings have actually dropped in some polls in recent days, notes Newhouse. He says the number of battleground states has expanded to include Wisconsin and perhaps New Mexico. Romney/Ryan has lots of money it can now start spending on the general election, and Republicans still have an edge over Democrats in enthusiasm for the upcoming vote, according to polls.

?Mitt Romney will be the next president,? concludes Newhouse.

Well, that?s certainly possible. But in essence Newhouse?s argument is not about the polls per se, but a restatement of the Romney campaign?s underlying theory of the race. That theory is this: The election will be a referendum on Obama?s performance, and the sour economy will sink him.

Democrats argue that the recent poll numbers show that this theory isn?t coming true. Obama got a bigger bounce out of the Democratic convention than Mr. Romney received from the GOP convention in Tampa, Fla., they say. And the latest polls may contain some details that spell danger for Romney.

Gallup?s tracking poll now has Romney leading Obama by only 53 to 41 percent among white voters, writes the left-leaning blogger Greg Sargent today at his Plum Line blog at The Washington Post. By some estimates, Romney needs to take 60 percent of whites to counter Obama?s large majorities among minority groups. Romney?s edge among college-educated whites is even smaller, at 49 to 46 percent.

?Keeping it close among these voters is key to Obama?s hopes of denying Romney the share of white voters he needs, given the President?s struggles with blue collar whites,? writes Sargent.

The pace of national polling should increase in coming days, with the conventions now over and the general election race fully underway. That means by the end of the week we should have a better idea as to whether Obama?s bounce marks a campaign break point, or whether it is indeed only a short-lasting sugar high.

(AP) ? Serena Williams wrapped up her remarkable summer with the latest rendition of a scene that has become familiar the past few months.

?Williams jumping up and down on the tennis court with a mile-wide smile across her face.

?Williams picking up a big-time prize ? this time, the U.S. Open trophy, which will look good somewhere near the gold medals she won at the Olympics and the silver plate she took home from Wimbledon.

If there was anything unexpected about her latest triumph, it was the challenge she faced from Victoria Azarenka, especially considering the way Williams dominated everyone she faced on the way to Sunday's final, to say nothing of the way the final started.

Come the third set, with the sun going down and the stadium completely blanketed in shadows, Williams stood only two points away from a loss. She rediscovered her form in time, took the last four games of the match and won her fourth title at Flushing Meadows and 15th Grand Slam title overall with a 2-6, 6-2, 7-5 victory. It was the first women's U.S. Open final to go three sets since 1995.

"If it was anybody other than Serena on the other side of the court, I'm not sure we'd be talking now," said Patrick Mouratoglou, a coach who has been working with Williams recently. "But it was Serena. She was there. She's a winner and she's a champion."

Mouratoglou helped Williams engineer a restoration that began shortly after she lost in the first round of the French Open in May, the only opening-round exit of her 49 career Grand Slam appearances.

"She said, 'I want to win Wimbledon, I want to start now,'" Mouratoglou said. "That's simple. That's how it started."

Since then, Williams won both singles and doubles at Wimbledon, then matched that feat a month later at the London Olympics.

The U.S. Open was the clincher ? a two-week clinic during which she lost only 19 games over her first six matches, then put on a display in how to play pressure tennis when the stakes were the highest. Trailing 5-3 and serving at 30-all against Azarenka, the Australian Open champion seeded first in this tournament, Williams wrested back control of the match by winning 10 of the next 12 points.

"Obviously, I never give up," Williams said. "I never, never quit. I've come back so many times in so many matches. I wasn't too nervous."

Indeed, for a woman who has had her share of flare-ups here in recent years, Williams barely showed a trace of emotion when this match was at its diciest. There was the smallest of hesitations for a second look after a serve was called out at 3-5, 30-15. And, when she closed out that game three points later, she did the quickest of skips ? a nearly imperceptible celebration before a calm walk to the chair to get ready for the service break she had to have.

She got it, then held serve, and then twice held off Azarenka when she was one point from forcing a third-set tiebreaker. The first save came on a backhand winner, one of 44 winners Williams hit to only 13 for her counterpunching, but less powerful, opponent.

"Feels like there is no room for a mistake," Azarenka said in describing what it's like dealing with Williams' game. "There is no room for a wrong decision."

Williams hasn't always played the role of cool customer in the crucible of Arthur Ashe Stadium.

In the 2009 semifinals, she was angered by a foot-fault call that resulted in a double-fault, setting up match point for her opponent, Kim Clijsters. Williams brandished her racket at the line judge and got docked match point. Then, two years later, while losing to Sam Stosur in the 2011 final, Williams berated the chair umpire after losing a point for screaming before it had ended.

There was a foot-fault call in this match, too, while Williams was serving at 40-0 while trailing 2-0 in the second set. She didn't react immediately, but when the game was over, she stared down the lineman while walking to her chair for the changeover. The linesman chuckled a bit. No biggie.

"I'm just happy that she got through this one without any incident and was able to try to forget all that in the past," said her mom, Oracene Price. "Because I think that was a lot in her mind."

Also on Williams' mind this summer has been her long journey back.

Shortly after winning Wimbledon in 2010, she cut her feet on broken glass while on her way out of a restaurant in Germany. That led to two operations on her right foot. Later, she got clots in her lungs and needed to inject herself with a blood thinner. Those shots led to a pool of blood gathering under her stomach's skin, requiring another procedure in the hospital.

By the time all that was over, she had been off tour for about 10 months. She returned in 2011.

"She was so disgusted at home. She felt like she was useless. That's the way it is with athletes, I guess. She couldn't sit still," Price said. "She was getting depressed. A lot to overcome."

She did overcome it, and now she adds another championship to the best resume currently in the game.

She is the first woman to win Wimbledon and the U.S. Open in the same season since 2002, which is when she last did it.

She moved three Grand Slam titles away from a tie for fourth on the all-time list with Martina Navratilova and Chris Evert.

Navratilova was the last thirty-something to win the U.S. Open. Williams, who turns 31 on Sept. 26, joins her on that list.

But Williams does not play, act or talk like a woman nearing the end of her career.

There are a few tournaments to be played this fall on hard court. The next Grand Slam season starts in January in Australia. Williams said "my motivation is up there," and those who know her feel it, too.

"She's very, very motivated and feels she can win every tournament," Mouratoglou said. "If one day she doesn't feel the same, we'll see, but for the moment, she feels she can win every tournament she plays, which is true, she can. So, she's prepared to do everything to do it."
