adrianpasdara: Sex education, grooming and the nature of liberty ...

witchround

Over the years when My Black Cat scouted around the Internet looking for Intertwinglements she came across all sorts of rubbish, unproven ?facts,? and conspiracy theories regarding paedophilia.

In addition she came across some information that seemed to be either plausible or credible. For example, she discovered that Harriet Harman and Patricia Hewitt were respectively Legal Officer and General Secretary to the National Council for Civil Liberties (NCCL, now Liberty) at the time when there was an affiliation with the pro-paedophilia groups P.I.E and P.A.L.

The following is from Wiki :

LIBERTY (pressure group)

1975?1989
From 1974-83 the NCCL was headed by Patricia Hewitt, who was later to become prominent in the Labour Party, serving as Health Secretary. A number of other future high profile Labour politicians worked at the organisation at this time, such as Harriet Harman who worked as the legal officer and her husband Jack Dromey.[11][12]

Paedophilia
In 1976, the NCCL stated to a parliamentary committee that ?Childhood sexual experiences, willingly engaged in, with an adult result in no identifiable damage? The real need is a change in the attitude which assumes that all cases of paedophilia result in lasting damage?. Organisations such as Paedophile Information Exchange (P.I.E.), a pro-paedophile activist group, and Paedophile Action for Liberation became affiliated to the pressure group. The NCCL stated they supported ?any organisation that seeks to campaign for anything it wants within the law? and that the ?NCCL has no policy on [the Paedophile Information Exchange?s] aims ? other than the evidence that children are harmed if, after a mutual relationship with an adult, they are exposed to the attentions of the police, press and court.? Groups such as P.I.E. were later excluded from the organisation.

Shami Chakrabarti, now the present director of Liberty, criticised the actions of Jimmy Savile on the Andrew Marr show today.

Harriet Harman is also adopting a high profile role.

Patricia Hewitt is saying nothing.

It would be in the public interest to hear the views that these three women held regarding paedophilia immediately before Jimmy Savile?s alleged paedophilia reached the headlines.

It would also be in the public interest to know the views held by Harriet Harman and Patricia Hewitt at the time that P.I.E and P.A.T were affiliated to NCCL (now Liberty).

Richard Murphy gives an account of a debate in his University in the 1970s and his views on why??.

NO ONE TALKED ABOUT JIMMY SAVILE

Here is some more information that My Black Cat collected involving attitudes to paedophilia in Germany in the 1970s.

HOW THE LEFT TOOK THINGS TOO FAR

?Germany?s left has its own tales of abuse. One of the goals of the German 1968 movement was the sexual liberation of children. For some, this meant overcoming all sexual inhibitions, creating a climate in which even pedophilia was considered progressive.?

The above link is probably credible.

But is what comes next credible also? Is it plausible?

A few years ago while hunting Intertwinglements, My Black Cat came across a leaflet that was said to originate from the German Government aimed at parents and schools advising them regarding sex education of their children. Apparently it went much further that even the most liberal sex education in the UK.

Unfortunately, black cats are not multilingual and neither is The Witch Doctor so we couldn?t read what it said. Anyway, we can?t find the document now but it was there to be seen some years ago. There is a reference to it in another blog. The question is:

Follow the link below. Is the post it leads to conspiratorial, plausible or credible?

This is the question The Witch Doctor has to ask herself every time My Black Cat dumps rats on the floor of The Spell Pantry.

Sometimes she is not sure of the answer.

LEGALISED CHILD ABUSE IN GERMANY : SEX AND THE PRE-SCHOOL CHILD

Jimmy Savile may be have been highly intelligent kind of sociopath. Perhaps he even intellectualised child sexual abuse. Who knows? Perhaps his beliefs and actions during his lifetime, will permit us all to question what we regard as paedophilia and form views about it that are moral, sensible, and above all our own, and not dependent on the Creep that might result from the influence of past, present or future pressure groups.

Perhaps we also need to question when sex education becomes grooming.

Perhaps these questions will lead us beyond the UK, beyond the Island of Jersey, and further afield into Europe.

HONOLULU (AP) ? A photograph of a 93-year-old World War II veteran casting what will likely be his last ballot has captured the hearts of tens of thousands of Internet users.

The photo shows Frank Tanabe lying in a hospital bed at home as his daughter Barbara Tanabe helps him fill out his absentee ballot. A half-million people saw the picture on the website Reddit after his grandson posted it there on Thursday, making it one of the most popular items on the social media network for a day after.

"True Patriotism," was the top rated comment on the post. "This is America. Amen," was next, followed by "Thank you, Citizen."

Doctors diagnosed Tanabe with an inoperable cancer tumor in his liver two months ago. He's been in hospice care for the past three weeks at his daughter's home. His condition has been deteriorating, and he's been speaking little lately.

He's been determined to vote regardless, eagerly asking when the ballot would be arriving in the mail, his daughter said. She kept telling him, "don't worry, it's coming." He filled it out immediately when it landed in the mailbox on Wednesday.

Barbara Tanabe read aloud the names of the candidates to her dad. He either nodded "yes" to the names or shook his head "no." She filled in the boxes on his behalf, following his instructions even when he didn't pick the people she wanted.

"There were some that were OK, but there were others where I said, 'Dad, are you sure?'" she said.

But he knew what he was doing. He's kept up on the issues, reading newspapers regularly until only recently, she said.

Tanabe volunteered to join the Army from behind barbed wire at the Tule Lake internment camp in California. He was pulled out of college at the University of Washington and taken to the camp when President Franklin D. Roosevelt ordered 110,000 Japanese-Americans detained and isolated after the start of the war with Japan.

The Army assigned Tanabe to the Military Intelligence Service, a classified unit whose members were collectively awarded the Congressional Gold Medal last year along with soldiers who served in the 100th Infantry Battalion and 442nd Regimental Combat Team ? highly decorated segregated units of mostly Japanese-Americans.

"I'd like to accept on behalf of all hyphenated Americans, including American-Americans," Tanabe told the Honolulu Star-Advertiser at the time. "We all served together in defense of our country."

Noah Tanabe, the grandson who posted the photo online, said he thinks about his grandfather every time he votes.

"It's hard to imagine - after his family business is torched, his family imprisoned, and denied the opportunity to finish his college education - he volunteered to serve. I don't know if I would have done the same thing, but we are all very proud of him," he said.

The family has been surprised and gratified by the online comments on the photo, Barbara Tanabe said.

"I think he feels like joining the Army, going to the camp, fighting in the war, and fighting discrimination ? these were all things he did so that we have this precious right to vote," she said. "For so many people to express their heartfelt tribute to my father was really, really heartwarming for us."

Several Reddit commentators asked whether Tanabe's vote would be counted if he passed away before Election Day on Nov. 6.

Glenn Takahashi, Honolulu election administrator, said absentee ballots cast by voters who later die become invalid if the state Department of Health notifies elections officials of the death before Election Day. To void a ballot when that happens, officials have to be able to sort through tens of thousands of ballots to find the one in question. This is not always practical, and so the ballot is counted if it isn't.

A similar situation arose in Honolulu four years ago when President Barack Obama's grandmother died two nights before the election but after she mailed her absentee ballot. Hawaii counted her vote anyway because the Health Department didn't receive her certificate of death before the election.

Barbara Tanabe said her father, a quiet, unassuming man, would wonder what the fuss over the photo was about. But he'd be thrilled it encouraged others to vote, she said.

"That would be the ultimate honor for him," she said.

I have a question. The turians in this, are they the cannon ones listed in the wiki, which were said to be extremely fast and could jump like the raptors they were suppose to be? Or the ME3 ones, which were slow, awkward, clunky, and completely under powered in comparison to the krogans in almost every way?

Feds' stance on pot cloudy before 3 states vote

Ted S. Warren / AP file

Marijuana is weighed and packaged for sale at the Northwest Patient Resource Center medical marijuana dispensary in Seattle earlier this month.

By Reuters

LOS ANGELES - A top Justice Department official has said in a television interview that the federal government is ready to combat any "dangers" of state-sanctioned recreational pot, amid criticism of the Obama administration for its relative silence on legalization drives in three states.

Voters in Colorado, Washington state and Oregon are set to vote Nov. 6 on whether to legalize and tax marijuana sales, raising the possibility of a showdown with the federal government, which views pot as an illegal narcotic.

Deputy Attorney General James Cole, in comments to "60 Minutes" posted on Saturday to the website of CBS affiliate KCNC-TV in Denver, said his office's stance on pot would be "the same as it's always been" if voters approved legalization.

"We're going to take a look at whether or not there are dangers to the community from the sale of marijuana and we're going to go after those dangers," Cole told "60 Minutes" in an outtake from a report on Colorado's medical marijuana industry due to air Sunday, according to the CBS affiliate.

Cole's statement is an indication the federal government, which has raided medical pot dispensaries in several of the 17 states that allow cannabis as medicine, could also take aim at state-sanctioned recreational marijuana.

It also represents a break with the Obama administration's relative silence about the pot referendums, which has led to uncertainty about whether federal officials would stop states from taxing and regulating sales of pot in special stores to those 21 and older, as proposed under each of the three state initiatives before voters.

Representatives for the Justice Department did not return calls or emails seeking comment on Cole's remarks.

A top legalization backer, however, dismissed them as "innocuous," unlike the stance Attorney General Eric Holder took in 2010 just weeks before a failed California referendum to legalize pot.

Voters in three states will decide next month on whether to become the first states to legalize marijuana for recreational use and doing so would put Colorado, Washington and Oregon in direct conflict with the federal law. The Huffington Post's Ryan Grim discusses.

'Wait and see'
In 2010, Holder issued a toughly worded letter that said his office "strongly" opposed the California proposal and would "vigorously enforce" drug laws against participants in the recreational pot trade, even if state law permitted it.?

Holder's statement is credited with helping to persuade some California voters to reject the proposal.

"Compared to what they did two years ago in California, to have their federal posture be essentially a wait-and-see approach is encouraging," said Ethan Nadelmann, head of the Drug Policy Alliance, which through affiliates has funded marijuana legalization campaigns.?

Polls show the American public is increasingly leaning toward legalizing pot, but no state has taken that step.?

Nadelmann said pot legalization is popular with young people and independents, two groups of voters crucial to President Barack Obama's re-election campaign, and that his administration is "being smart in basically not weighing in at this time."?

Marijuana is the most commonly used illicit drug in the United States. Pot activists say prohibition fails to prevent its use and enriches criminal cartels, but opponents of legalization say it would endanger health and public safety.?

Watch US News videos on NBCNews.com

Former heads of the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration in September sent a letter to Holder urging him to publicly oppose the legalization referendums. On Monday, a former federal official expressed dismay at the Obama administration's silence.?

"It's shocking, because all you have to do is say things that this administration's already said," John Walters, who served as "drug czar" to former President George W. Bush, told reporters on a conference call.?

Cole's remarks to "60 Minutes" were in response to a question about the possibility of recreational pot being allowed in Colorado, according to the station, which posted a video with the outtake on its website.?

"I think it is pretty clear from this video that the Obama administration won't take any legalization measure lying down," Kevin Sabet, a former adviser to Gil Kerlikowske, the Obama administration's drug policy director, said in an email.

Ritholtz's rules of investing (part II) | The Big Picture

Ritholtz?s rules of investing (part II)
Barry Ritholtz
October 12 2012

?

This week, we?re going to pick up with my rules for investing. These rules come from 20 years of experience ? or 20 years of learning from my own mistakes. My list is designed to help you understand what you face as an investor and avoid the sorts of errors that cost many investors a lot of money. Understanding the philosophy here will result in fewer losses, better performance and more restful nights.

Because I didn?t want to overwhelm you, I broke the list into two parts. Before we get to this week?s list, you can read the first part here. For those reading this in the newspaper, those six rules were:

1. Cut your losers short, and let your winners run.

2. Avoid predictions and forecasts

3. Understand crowd behavior.

4. Think like a contrarian.

5. Asset allocation is crucial.

6. Decide if you are an active or passive investor.

Let?s move on to part two:

7. Understand your own psychological make up. Most investors think they are competing against other traders, big institutions, hedge funds etc. In fact, they are their own most dangerous opponent.

Why is that? It is because of the way we are wired. We fall prey to all sorts of cognitive errors. We are overconfident in our abilities to pick stocks, time the market, know when to sell. We suffer from confirmation bias, seeking out that which agrees with us and ignoring facts that challenge our views. We vacillate between emotional extremes of fear and greed. We are surprisingly risk-averse, and at precisely the wrong times. The recency effect has us overemphasizing recent data points while ignoring long-term trends.

Our own cognitive and psychological errors often lead us down the wrong path. You can counter these foibles only if you are aware of them.

8. Admit when you are wrong. One of the biggest problems many investors have is admitting they made a bad investment. Men, suffering as they do from testosterone poisoning, are especially bad at this. Whether it?s ego or just stubbornness, too many people seem to hold on to their losers for way too long. Pride can be a very expensive sin.

The most effective approach is to admit your error, fix the mistake, then move on.

Think of investing as more akin to batting in baseball than to being a lawyer, accountant or doctor. If you are a .333 hitter ? if you get a hit one out of three times at bat ? you are an all-star ball player. A doctor who loses two-thirds of his patients or an accountant who has 66 percent of his clients audited are both doing something terribly wrong.

We have a saying in my office called ?strong opinions weakly held.? We may have a high degree of confidence in a particular investing theme ? say, emerging markets dividends or municipal bonds ? but as soon as we have proof we are wrong, we reverse the position, sell the holding and move on.

I believe in admitting errors and, in fact, each year I publish a list of mea culpas ? describing my worst investing errors. I explain what I did wrong and what I learned from it. It may be human to make mistakes, but it is foolish to make the same ones over and over. Try making some new mistakes instead.

9. Understand the cycles of the financial world. Another challenging thing to do in investing is to reverse your thinking, especially after a specific approach has been profitable for a long time. The longer the period of successful thinking, the more important ? and challenging ? the reversal will be.

Pay attention to history, and you learn that events move in long, irregular cycles. We have the business cycle, which alternates between periods of expansion and contraction. Recessions happen, as do recoveries.

Then there is the market cycle, where booms and busts occur regularly. Every bull market is followed by a bear; every bear market is followed by a bull. This can be difficult to remember when you are in throes of either one. It seemed in 1999 that almost no one could imagine that the manic price rises of the market would ever end.

And in late 2008 and early 2009, it looked like the vicious market collapse would never end. But it did ? and it always does.

?This too shall pass? is a proverb that humbled King Solomon. Understand what it means when you mistakenly believe something will never change.

10. Be intellectually curious. There is a tendency amongst investors to settle into a comfort zone. You develop a particular style, find an investing method you like ? and then think it will last forever. This is a recipe for slothful calcification.

Heraclitus was a Greek philosopher whose doctrine of flux stated ?The only constant is change.? This is especially true in investing. The many different inputs that drive market returns constantly change. At various times, it can be profits, the Fed, the economy, interest rates, technology, tax policy, etc. It is important that you constantly upgrade your skill set, while learning to be both adaptive and flexible.

The best investors all have a healthy dose of intellectual curiosity. If everything else is changing, but you are not, then you are being left behind.

11. Reduce investing friction. Friction refers to all of the little costs that, when compounded over time, can add up to big dollars. In investing, friction refers to anything that is a drag on total returns outside of market performance. Think about the long-term effects of the fees, costs, expenses and taxes on your net, above and beyond how your investments did.

Since 1974, the markets have returned about 10 percent a year. The average 401(k) retirement account earned about 3 percent annually over that period. There are numerous reasons these portfolios radically underperformed the markets, but one of the primary reasons is the layers of excess fees and fund loads.

Investors with lower costs tend to have better growth and retain more of their assets over the long haul. Keep your fees, costs expenses and taxes low. It is a guaranteed way to improve your returns.

12. There is no free lunch. This is the most fundamental rule in all of economics. It gets forgotten by too many investors. The temptation is to get something for nothing.

You never get something for nothing. Consider:

That hot stock tip? You want the upside without doing all of the tax research.

High-yield junk bonds? Some people believe that an 8 percent yield when the 10-year Treasury is paying 1.62 percent does not come with an increased risk of default. They are mistaken.

Sitting in way too much cash? It creates a false illusion of safety that will not keep up with inflation.

No one on television is going to make you wealthy. There is no magic formula or silver bullet or secret hedge fund.

The best investors generate long-term returns by making rational, unemotional decisions. They do their homework, spend time and effort learning the basics. They are unemotional, intelligent and patient. You can be as well.

Ask Engadget: What's the best way to store my media collection?

Ask Engadget

We know you've got questions, and if you're brave enough to ask the world for answers, then here's the outlet to do so. This week's Ask Engadget inquiry is from Michael, who is suffering from a storage crunch. If you're looking to ask one of your own, drop us a line at ask [at] engadget [dawt] com.

"I'm a bargain-basement kinda guy, and I've picked up lots of DVDs cheaply during the sale season(s). I was planning to rip my collection with Handbrake so I could watch them on my iPad, but my 1TB HDD is already close to being maxed out! Is there a better solution out there than just buying a 2TB HDD now, waiting a year and buying a 3TB HDD when the prices come down? Is there a cheap RAID-style system that plays nicely with my iTunes? Please help!"

  • You can pick up a standalone 3TB external HDD for between $150 and $200,
  • Or you could take the leap and set up an iTunes home server, perhaps using the cheapest Synology DiskStation, which is $200 plus the cost of the drives. That way you can get a 4TB iTunes server for just under $400.
  • You could also snag a Drobo that'll give you the same storage options with significantly increased expandability, up to 16TB in the future.

That said, perhaps our friendly readers know a way to tame this man's ever growing media collection, so if you've already set up your own system, why not share your knowledge in the comments below?

CIA found militant links a day after Libya attack

FILE - In this Sept. 13, 2012 file photo, a Libyan man investigates the inside of the U.S. Consulate, after an attack that killed four Americans, including Ambassador Chris Stevens on the night of Tuesday, Sept. 11, 2012, in Benghazi, Libya. U.S. officials tell The Associated Press that the CIA station chief in Libya reported to Washington within 24 hours of last month?s deadly attack on the U.S. Consulate that there was evidence it was carried out by militants, not a mob upset about an American-made, anti-Muslim movie. It is unclear whether anyone outside the CIA saw the cable at that point or how high up in the CIA the information went. (AP Photo/Mohammad Hannon, File)

(AP) ? The CIA station chief in Libya reported to Washington within 24 hours of last month's deadly attack on the U.S. Consulate that there was evidence it was carried out by militants, not a spontaneous mob upset about an American-made video ridiculing Islam's Prophet Muhammad, U.S. officials have told The Associated Press.

It is unclear who, if anyone, saw the cable outside the CIA at that point and how high up in the agency the information went. The Obama administration maintained publicly for a week that the attack on the diplomatic mission in Benghazi that killed U.S. Ambassador Chris Stevens and three other Americans was a result of the mobs that staged less-deadly protests across the Muslim world around the 11th anniversary of the 9/11 terror attacks on the U.S.

Those statements have become highly charged political fodder as the presidential election approaches. A Republican-led House committee questioned State Department officials for hours about what GOP lawmakers said was lax security at the consulate, given the growth of extremist Islamic militants in North Africa.

And in their debate on Tuesday, President Barack Obama and Republican challenger Mitt Romney argued over when Obama first said it was a terror attack. In his Rose Garden address the morning after the killings, Obama said, "No acts of terror will ever shake the resolve of this great nation, alter that character or eclipse the light of the values that we stand for."

But Republicans say he was speaking generally and didn't specifically call the Benghazi attack a terror attack until weeks later, with the president and other key members of his administration referring at first to the anti-Muslim movie circulating on the Internet as a precipitating event.

Now congressional intelligence committees are demanding documents to show what the spy agencies knew and when, before, during and after the attacks.

The White House now says the attack probably was carried out by an al Qaida-linked group, with no public demonstration beforehand. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton blamed the "fog of war" for the early conflicting accounts.

The officials who told the AP about the CIA cable spoke anonymously because they were not authorized to release such information publicly.

Congressional aides say they expect to get the documents by the end of this week to build a timeline of what the intelligence community knew and compare that to what the White House was telling the public about the attack. That could give Romney ammunition to use in his foreign policy debate with Obama on Monday night.

The two U.S. officials said the CIA station chief in Libya compiled intelligence reports from eyewitnesses within 24 hours of the assault on the consulate that indicated militants launched the violence, using the pretext of demonstrations against U.S. facilities in Egypt against the film to cover their intent. The report from the station chief was written late Wednesday, Sept. 12, and reached intelligence agencies in Washington the next day, intelligence officials said.

Yet, on Saturday of that week, briefing points sent by the CIA to Congress said "demonstrations in Benghazi were spontaneously inspired by the protests at the U.S. Embassy in Cairo and evolved into a direct assault."

The briefing points, obtained by the AP, added: "There are indications that extremists participated in the violent demonstrations" but did not mention eyewitness accounts that blamed militants alone.

Such raw intelligence reports by the CIA on the ground would normally be sent first to analysts at the headquarters in Langley, Va., for vetting and comparing against other intelligence derived from eavesdropping drones and satellite images. Only then would such intelligence generally be shared with the White House and later, Congress, a process that can take hours, or days if the intelligence is coming only from one or two sources who may or may not be trusted.

U.S. intelligence officials say in this case the delay was due in part to the time it took to analyze various conflicting accounts. One official, speaking on condition of anonymity because he wasn't authorized to discuss the incident publicly, explained that "it was clear a group of people gathered that evening" in Benghazi, but that the early question was "whether extremists took over a crowd or they were the crowd."

But that explanation has been met with concern in Congress.

"The early sense from the intelligence community differs from what we are hearing now," Rep. Adam Schiff, D-Calif., said. "It ended up being pretty far afield, so we want to figure out why ... though we don't want to deter the intelligence community from sharing their best first impressions" after such events in the future.

"The intelligence briefings we got a week to 10 days after were consistent with what the administration was saying," said Rep. William Thornberry, R-Texas, a member of the House Intelligence and Armed Services committees. Thornberry would not confirm the existence of the early CIA report but voiced skepticism over how sure intelligence officials, including CIA Director David Petraeus, seemed of their original account when they briefed lawmakers on Capitol Hill.

"How could they be so certain immediately after such events, I just don't know," he said. "That raises suspicions that there was political motivation."

National Security Council spokesman Tommy Vietor declined comment. The Office of the Director of National Intelligence did not respond to requests for comment.

Two officials who witnessed Petraeus' closed-door testimony to lawmakers in the week after the attack said that during questioning he acknowledged that there were some intelligence analysts who disagreed with the conclusion that an unruly mob angry over the video had initiated the violence. But those officials said Petraeus did not mention the CIA's early eyewitness reports. He did warn legislators that the account could change as more intelligence was uncovered, they said, speaking on condition of anonymity because the hearing was closed.

Beyond the question of what was known immediately after the attack, it's also proving difficult to pinpoint those who set the fire that apparently killed Stevens and his communications aide or launched the mortars that killed two ex-Navy SEALs who were working as contract security guards at a fallback location. That delay is prompting lawmakers to question whether the intelligence community has the resources it needs to investigate this attack in particular or to wage the larger fight against al-Qaida in Libya or across Africa.

Intelligence officials say the leading suspected culprit is a local Benghazi militia, Ansar al-Shariah. The group denies responsibility for the attack but is known to have ties to a leading African terror group, al-Qaida in the Islamic Maghreb. Some of its leaders and fighters were spotted by Libyan locals at the consulate during the violence, and intelligence intercepts show the militants were in contact with AQIM militants before and after the attack, one U.S. intelligence official said.

But U.S. intelligence has not been able to match those reported sightings with the faces of attackers caught on security camera recordings during the attack since many U.S. intelligence agents were pulled out of Benghazi in the aftermath of the violence, the two U.S. intelligence officials said.

Nor have they found proof to back up their suspicion that the attack was preplanned, as indicated by the military-style tactics the attackers used, setting up a perimeter of roadblocks around the consulate and the backup compounds, then attacking the main entrance to distract, while sending a larger force to assault the rear.

Clear-cut answers may prove elusive because such an attack is not hard to bring about relatively swiftly with little preplanning or coordination in a post-revolutionary country awash with weapons, where the government is so new it still relies on armed militants to keep the peace. Plus, the location of U.S. diplomat enclaves is an open secret for the locals.

Cardinals beat Giants 8-3 to take 3-1 lead in NLCS

ST. LOUIS (AP) ? Adam Wainwright looked like an ace again and some of the St. Louis Cardinals' top hitters rediscovered their strokes.

On the verge of a repeat wild-card title shot, the defending World Series champions have picked a good time to put it all together.

"It's always nice to wake up and understand that if you win, you're moving on, especially when the World Series is at your fingertips," third baseman David Freese said after the Cardinals' 8-3 victory over the San Francisco Giants in Game 4 of the NLCS Thursday night. "Tomorrow's going to be fun either way."

The Cardinals can close it out at home Friday night in Game 5. Lance Lynn faces Giants lefty Barry Zito, and a St. Louis win would set up a 2006 World Series rematch with Detroit.

But the Cardinals realize it's not time to celebrate yet.

"We just have to keep our head down," manager Mike Matheny said. "Keep playing the game. Keep doing things right. Stay aggressive, stay within yourself, do your piece, and trust that we can pull together and do what we need to do."

The Giants are in a big hole after Wainwright threw seven innings of four-hit ball and a 12-hit attack roughed up Tim Lincecum and the San Francisco bullpen Thursday night.

Matt Holliday and Yadier Molina each drove in their first two runs of the series, and leadoff man Jon Jay also had two RBIs.

"In the postseason, the stats don't always look great," Holliday said. "A lot of times the stats, guys feel better about their swings than the stats show. Obviously, this helps with confidence."

The Giants won three straight to eliminate Cincinnati in the division series. Now they have to do it against a team that appears to have everything working.

"Every day is a new day," said Hunter Pence, who hit his first homer of the series. "The motto is to find a way to win and bring it back to San Francisco."

The Cardinals could have their top postseason bat back for Game 5. Carlos Beltran missed virtually all of Games 3 and 4 with a left knee strain, but is optimistic about playing after doing some jogging and hitting indoors Thursday.

"Right now, the plan is to come in tomorrow and do what I have to do in order to be in the lineup," said Beltran, who is batting .375 in the postseason with three homers and six RBIs. "Today was a better day for me, better than yesterday.

"Tomorrow is the day I need to go for it."

Lincecum was a bust in his first postseason start since the 2010 World Series clincher over Texas, giving up four runs in 4 2-3 innings.

"Right now, I'm obviously upset at myself," Lincecum said. "I don't want to go out there and put my bullpen in a situation where we have to use them the way we've been using them."

The two-time Cy Young Award winner with the quirky delivery earned a shot based on nearly spotless relief work earlier in the postseason, but reverted to regular-season form, when he was 10-15 with a 5.18 ERA, worst among qualifying starters in the National League.

Wainwright was rehabbing from reconstructive elbow surgery during the Cardinals' improbable title drive last fall. They earned the wild card on the final day of the season and then upset the favored Phillies, Brewers and Rangers to give manager Tony La Russa a chance to retire on top.

Under rookie manager Mike Matheny, the 88-win Cardinals were the final team to qualify this year, too. Once again, they've stepped up their game.

Wainwright bounced back from a poor outing in Game 5 of the NL division series against Washington, striking out five and walking none for his first postseason victory as a starter.

"This season has gone so fast to me, I just can't believe where we are right now," Wainwright said. "When I missed last year, in the offseason I was just like 'Can we please do that again next year?'

"As painful as it was not to be able to help last year, I feel like I'm a major contributor this year, and I'm having a lot of fun."

The lone damage against Wainwright came on Pence's 451-foot homer in the second that cut the Cardinals' lead to 2-1.

Just 12 pitches in, the Cardinals had two hits, a walk and the lead, and Lincecum got a visit from pitching coach Dave Righetti. Jay opened the first with a single, Matt Carpenter walked on four pitches and Holliday singled up the middle for the lead. Allen Craig tacked on a sacrifice fly.

Lincecum had retired eight in a row before getting knocked out in the fifth on a rally that started with Carpenter's double off the top of the wall in right-center with one out. The Giants had a good chance of throwing out Carpenter at the plate on Holliday's single, but shortstop Brandon Crawford's relay short-hopped catcher Hector Sanchez and Carpenter scored on a headfirst slide to make it 3-1.

Molina's RBI single with two outs chased Lincecum.

Pablo Sandoval hit a two-run homer in the ninth, but the NL West champs are on the brink of elimination.

"We have all the confidence in Barry," manager Bruce Bochy said. "We do need to get the bats going. They've been shutting us down."

NOTES: Cardinals Hall of Famers Stan Musial and Ozzie Smith made pregame appearances. The 91-year-old Musial toured the warning track in a golf cart while waving to fans and Smith threw out the first pitch. Smith's son, Nikko, a former American Idol finalist, sang the national anthem. ... With Beltran out, Matheny changed the lineup for the first time in the postseason. ... According to STATS LLC, the Giants have faced a 2-1 series deficit eight times in franchise history. They have lost Game 4 each time. ... Wainwright has a 2.48 ERA in 13 postseason appearances, four of them starts.

"Genius" inventor Stanford Ovshinsky dies

Thu Oct 18, 2012 3:19pm EDT

(Reuters) - Stanford R. Ovshinsky, the Michigan-based inventor whose development of the nickel-metal hydride battery helped the Toyota Prius become the world's first successful hybrid car, died on Wednesday evening, aged 89.

Ovshinsky, a self-taught scientist, also developed -- and often patented -- a wide variety of breakthrough products and processes, from thin-film solar cells to hydrogen fuel cells.

It was his work on the rechargeable NiMH battery, however, that had the broadest reach and greatest impact on consumers. Until being replaced by more advanced lithium-ion batteries, Ovshinsky's patented NiMH battery chemistry was used in millions of devices such as laptop computers, digital cameras and mobile phones.

The cause of death was prostate cancer, according to his son, Harvey Ovshinsky.

Born in 1922 in Akron, Ohio, Stan Ovshinsky moved to Detroit at age 30 to become director of research at automotive and defense supplier Hupp Corp. In 1960, he co-founded Energy Conversion Devices with his second wife, Iris, a PhD chemist.

In 2007, Ovshinsky was forced out of ECD. With his third wife, Rosa, he then established Ovshinsky Innovation and Ovshinsky Solar to continue his research in energy and information technologies.

Ovshinsky was often hailed in the scientific community and by the media. In 1987, he was profiled as "Japan's American Genius" in the PBS television series Nova. In 1999, Time magazine named him a "Hero for the Planet." Britain's Economist magazine in 2006 dubbed Ovshinsky "the Edison of our age."

Ovshinsky held hundreds of patents in the United States and overseas and was awarded honorary doctoral degrees by at least seven schools, including the University of Michigan.

NBC cancels 'Animal Practice'

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Crystal the monkey is hanging up her doctor's coat.

NBC said Thursday it's pulling the low-rated sitcom "Animal Practice," with the last episode to air Nov. 7.

The series stars Justin Kirk ("Weeds") as a veterinarian at a New York animal hospital. His co-stars include Crystal, a Capuchin monkey with the "Hangover" movie sequel among her credits.

"Animal Practice" had the dubious distinction of annoying Olympic viewers: NBC interrupted the Summer Games' closing ceremony to air the sitcom's debut episode.

This week, "Animal Practice" drew less than 4 million viewers. That compares to the more than 14 million averaged by top-rated sitcom "The Big Bang Theory" on CBS.

"Animal Practice" will be replaced by "Whitney," starring Whitney Cummings, which returns for its second-season debut 8 p.m. Eastern, Wednesday, Nov. 14.

Snapshots from The Next Iron Chef at the NYC Wine and Food Festival

iron chef

Iron Chef? ?It?s the top coveted spot in the culinary food television world. ?Over the?past couple of years, Food Network has sponsored The Next Iron Chef competition, which allows chefs the opportunity to win that priceless Iron Chef jacket and a place in Kitchen Stadium. ?Past winners have included Michael Symon, Marc Forgione, Jose Garces, and Geoffrey Zakarian. ?This year?s season of The Next Iron Chef is all about one thing: redemption! ?Previously eliminated chefs who are hungry for a second chance have the opportunity to again compete for the title of Iron Chef.

To celebrate the impending anticipation of the season premiere on Sunday, November 4 and as part of the New York City Wine and Food Festival, all the current Iron Chefs (minus Bobby Flay, who was hosting his annual taco event across town) and the Next Iron Chef hopefuls came together to throw an unbelievable kick-off gastronomic party, hosted by who else but Alton Brown!

The late-night, walk-around tasting was held at the Meatpacking District?s Highline Stages, directly across the street from Food Network Studios housed in Chelsea Market. ?Each chef prepared a unique and creative offering, and drinks were a flowing all night long courtesy of Southern Wine & Spirits.

Here is a picture recap of this epic event?

This was quite the party. ?Walking into Highline Studios, the music was pumping, colored spotlights everywhere. ?Huge screens were mounted to the wall, showing various promos from the upcoming season. ?Two full bars were serving up Entwine wine and other various concoctions. ?As we entered, eight of the Next Iron Chef contestants were busy getting their dishes ready for service. ?We walked right past them, however, in order to get to the back of the venue where all the Iron Chef stations were housed. We wanted to taste all of their food before the hungry mass of people descended upon us, which soon happened anyway:

Entering the Iron Chef room, I must admit, it was really cool to see all of them in their official Kitchen Stadium jackets!

First up was Iron Chef Michael Symon?s station:

Please forgive the weird lighting in some of these photos. ?There were tons of colored lights and getting consistent photos was near impossible.

They served up this tasty Duck Rilletes with Pickles and Mustard?

Iron Chef Michael Symon was nice enough to take a picture with us both? that got Asheley really excited (okay, me too).

michael symon

Just to the left of Michael Symon was Iron Chef Jose Garces?

I got the chance to briefly talk to Iron Chef Jose Garces about how much I enjoyed all the food at his taco truck and the Foie Gras Burger with Duck Fat Fries from Village Whiskey at Revel Casino in Atlantic City during my Bachelor Party Food Fest.

He served up this delicious Pozole Verde ? Green Hominy Soup with Crab, Green Chile, and Herbs.

On our way to the next station, I spotted the winner of the Next Food Network Star, Justin Warner. ?He was being catered around like crazy by a camera crew that was shooting promos of some sort.

I watched this past season of The Next Food Network Star and he was super interesting to watch. ?Justin has really creative culinary ideas and shows many similarities to Alton Brown. ?Could it be that he?s being groomed to replace Alton Brown in Kitchen Stadium at some point? ?Only time will tell, but if he does, you heard it here first!

Justin Warner

Justin was happy to stop and pose for a picture? he?s a super funny guy. ?When our camera didn?t work for a second, he said ?No worries, try again. ?I?m not going anywhere, just going to drink more and more as the night goes on?.

Justin Warner

We made our way?Iron Chef Masaharu Morimoto?s station. ?He was super involved in every plate that went out, putting the finishing touches on each slider in between taking photos with guests.

Morimoto

He served up some amazing Yellow Pastrami Sliders with Truffle, which was one of my favorite dishes of the night.

Asheley was most excited to meet the newest Iron Chef, Geoffrey Zakarian. ?She blushes and smiles just saying his name. ?In her own words, ?He is my Silver Fox.? ?Ok, enough Asheley.

He brought along his Executive Chef from The National, Paul Corsentino. ?Asheley and I actually went to their Get Pickled event the following day, which was ridiculously outstanding (stay tuned for that post coming soon!)

Besides serving up some terrifically rich pork belly, Iron Chef Geoffrey Zakarian was handing out the now famous Hello Kitty Bandaids he always wears.

Iron Chef Marc Forgione was serving up his version of an ?Everything Bagel: Gougeres, Gravlax?. ?Gougeres is a French savory pastry of dough mixed with cheese, and gravlax is a?Scandinavian dish consisting of raw salmon cured with salt, sugar, and dill.

Marc Forgione had his team of chefs doing all the cooking and plating for him?

while he just interacted with all the guests, including this guy:

We then made our way on over to the pseudo-Kitchen Stadium Altar to say hello to good ole? Mr. Alton Brown. ?He ?was looking quite dapper and was super friendly and chatty with all the guests. ?Isn?t he just the coolest?

Back to some eating, courtesy of the Next Iron Chef contestants:

First up was Chef Nate Appleman, who had one of Asheley?s favorite dishes of the night?

Next up were these three chefs?

Chef Spike Mendelsohn, who you might also remember from Top Chef, had one of my favorite dishes of the night: Grilled BBQ?d Sweetbreads. ?He paired it with some housemade kimchi and pineapple. ?All the flavors played really nice together, creating a super flavorful and well balanced dish.

plating

Spike was out in front of the table expediting all the plates?

chef

Chef Jehangir Mehta, who?s two NYC restaurants I?ve been wanting to get to but still haven?t had the chance, was serving up ?an Indian Street Burger. ?I seemed to capture him in a pose where he looks kind of angry/scary, but in reality he was all smiles throughout the night?. and his burger was really interesting and delicious!

next iron chef

Chef Alex Guarnaschelli served up some superb one-bite Ribeye Steak Sandwiches. ?She scored major points in my book by also being the only chef to make a dessert, which was absolutely outstanding.

Moving on down the line?

Chef Elizabeth Falkner, who I really enjoyed watching last season in the Next Iron Chef competition and who just lost out on the Iron Chef title when Geoffrey Zakarian defeated her in the final round, made Fregola con le Sarde. ?I have to admit, I wasn?t a big fan, but Asheley really enjoyed it.

Elizabeth Falkner

Chef Amanda Freitag?s Lamb Meatballs with Greek Yogurt was simple yet quite delicious?

amanda freitag

Chef Eric Greenspan?s Grilled Cheese had some timing issues with plating due to the ?made to order? nature of grilled cheese. ?He seemed to always have a line of people waiting for it to be done cooking on the griddle? but Eric?s humor kept all those hungry people laughing and laughing. ?I didn?t know he was such a funny guy!

eric greenspan

Here is his ?Greenspan?s Grilled Cheese?, which was really great!

Finally, the last dish we tried was from Chef Marcel Vigneron, who you might remember from his stint on Top Chef.

marcel vigneron

His cleverly-titled dish, ?Cheeks and Leeks?, was absolutely fantastic and one of my favorites.

marcel vigneron

On the way out of the event I spotted Chef Marc Murphy, owner of Landmarc in NYC and one of the regular judges on Chopped.

marc murphy

What an amazing event filled with tons of unique and inventive food, opportunities to meet and get up close and personal with the Iron Chefs and Next Iron Chef hopefuls, and just have a great time with other people who love food! ?I can?t wait for this season of The Next Iron Chef? should be awesome! ?And make sure to save the date for next year?s NYC Wine and Food Festival: October 10-13, 2013. ?Try to attend an event and a part of the incredible gastronomic weekend!
